What Resolution Should My File Be?

As you probably know, in order to produce great results you have to provide great quality artwork. Providing low resolution artwork may create unexpected results and lead to poor quality prints or embroidery..

File size for digital print, screen print, & embroidery

Unfortunately, there isn’t one size that works for every print and embroidery art.  Instead the file size required is based upon the size of the artwork you’d like to print or embroider.  The larger you'd like the artwork printed or embroidered the larger the size of the file required.

The rule of thumb is that you should provide artwork at the size you want to create @ 300 DPI.  This means for every 1" of actual print size you will need 300px X 300px in your artwork.

For example, if you want a 10” x 10” print, your artwork should be 3000px x 3000px.

If you want a 4” x 4” embroidery, your file should be 1200px x 1200px.

File sizes for printed fabric products

Products that have fixed size customization areas like pocket tees, hoodie linings, and patch hats have standard dimension sizes. See the table below to get the artwork file size required for each customization area.
  1. Pocket Tees (1658px X 2108px)
  2. Hood Lining (4300px X 3000px)
  3. Hoodie Pockets (2850px X 1825px)
  4. Patch Hats (1350px X 1494px)
  5. Patch Beanies (1350px X 1494px)

How to check the resolution of your file?

You can check the resolution of your file graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop and Gimp

In Gimp; Simply go to the Image > Canvas Size or Image > Print Size.

In Photoshop; simply go to Image > Image Size.

Please note that although the image size does appear to be editable, in most cases you cannot simply scale up the image.  While this does create a larger image size, it does NOT improve the image quality.  Instead you are stretching the existing number of pixels into a larger area and the image will appear blurry or pixelated.
